“If you help enough other people get what they want, you will get everything you want.” This is my favorite quote from Zig Zigler but its origin comes from the Bible. In fact, it is a derivative of the Golden Rule.

In this day and age, we seem to be encouraged to get as much out of life as we can. Company slogans are in front of us daily telling us how important we are. Slogans like, “Have it your way!”; “Just do it”; “It’s everywhere you want to be”; and “because you’re worth it” are a few examples of the narcissistic society we are becoming.

I would encourage you to step away from that approach and consider mentoring a newer agent. By the way, mentoring does not mean taking half of their commissions and splitting business. Kindness is doing something for someone who can never pay you back. Show some kindness on those struggling in the business. Give them a lead with no expectations, provide a sales idea, or even, help them make a sell with no strings attached.

It is only when we find ourselves assisting others that we truly can define our success. If we are only in this industry for ourselves, we will ultimately end up failing. No one at your funeral will remember your sales number from 2016 or mention what honor club you achieved. What will be remembered are the people you helped and the lives you changed. Be the type of person that when you die, they have to find a bigger church because of the people you helped.

By the way, even when you expect nothing in return, the world has a way of repaying your generosity.
